The Lilting Sons of Country Folk, published at the end of 2000, features profiles of all the top traditional musicians from the southern half of County Roscommon, Ireland, from the early 1800s to 2000.
Not alone does it profile the lives and careers of the recording artists of the early 1900s, i.e. Pat Beades, Owen Hughes, Michael Anthony Glynn, Gargan’s Athlone Accordion Band (The Gallagher Bros.) and the McNulty Family, but also the more recent stars of Vinyl and CD, i.e. Brendan Shine, Patsy Hanly, Paul Brock, Alan Kelly, John Wynne, Jo Collins and lots more.
It also features the stars of early radio in Ireland, i.e. Charlie O’Brien, Pat Mannion, Pat Kelly, Owen Shine, and those who played and sang at the House Dances, the Cross-roads, the May Poles, the Patterns, the Fairs, the Pubs, the Wakes and the Halls of the region and beyond.
As Fintan Vallely described it in his Sunday Tribune review of 2001: “Declan Coyne’s Lilting Sons of Country Folk was a terrific resume of people and music.”
